Gaëtane Dion currently resides in Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley in the Eastern Townships. She works mainly in painting, installation and video. Her interest in painting was born as a teenager and led her to college and university studies in art at UQTR. Her approach is essentially figurative and we recognize her style with her characteristic characters. Over time, she explored with different mediums, oil painting, watercolor, dry pastel, oil stick, encaustic, acrylic and mixed techniques such as collage and monotype. Gaétane’s curiosity led her to experiment with digital in video and 2D animation.
Another characteristic activity of her art lies in the thematic installations she creates in the context of the exhibitions, inviting her viewer into an experience in several dimensions. A well-established local artist, her art spread to France, Spain and even Texas. She returned to school in 2016 to obtain a Master of Arts degree.
Inspired by her inner reflections and the banalities of everyday life, Gaëtane lets herself be guided in plastic exploration by her instincts, often without plans or sketches. She is interested in what is intimate to her, her environment, her dreams and the traces that it leaves in her imagination. She shares it in her artworks as if she were revealing a secret, giving it a mythical and enigmatic aspect.
Although her work may seem playful at first glance, she wants to challenge people with her unusual productions and Gaëtane is very intrigued in what it awakens in them. Throughout her creative process, she confides in a practice notebook about her moods, her ideas. She documents her discoveries and the stages of her project. She takes so much pleasure in opening this small door on her secret garden.
Artistic approach
Gaëtane draws inspiration from nature, perfect imperfections in her daily life, her personal experiences and her dreams. Her main influences come from Modigliani and his characters, and from Jean Dallaire in his patterns.
Through her project Faut pas se leurrer, the artist Gaétane Dion proposes to lift the veil on the invisible contained by the visible. Her visual discourse is inspired by both everyday life and another more enigmatic reality; a hazy reality, as elusive as it is ephemeral. That reality that leaves no trace except in the ambiguity without borders of our imagination: the dream.
This incursion into an unusual world invites the viewer to adjust the focus of his apprehension in the face of these dissonant scenes where our landmarks often drown in the comfort of our illusions. Her universe is combining abstraction to figuration and takes shape through different techniques. Experimenting with a new technique she discovered by accident, her work lies halfway between the monotype and the image transfer. She paints on her plastic tablecloth and then transfers the thin film of pigments on paper. It is an interesting analogy to her concept, that by approaching reality from another angle, we free it from this thin film of appearances to reveal its true colors.
She also creates a bridge between the universe of her project and the visitor by integrating 3D objects that echo her pictorial compositions. Her autofictional works offer enigmatic visual poetry that will challenge your perception and judgment of what you see.
The exhibition takes place from September 12 to November 7 at the Museum. Hurry up and get tickets! Come see the works of Gaëtane Dion.
